Homily given at the 11:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 11, 2013, the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Joe Gates, newly-ordained priest of the Diocese of Venice, Florida. Fr. Joe reflects on how we must always keep the lamps of our faith burning brightly throughout our lives, to be a light to others and to show that we are ready for the Lord's return, for we never know when the Lord Jesus may come for us.

We may be materially rich, but we are all poor, completely dependent on God. Dcn. Paul asks, Are we content to be poor? Do we live in a way that shows others that our life does not consist in possessions, but that our hope is in God alone?
